The One Step To Overpower The Fear Of Failure

Have you ever wanted to do something that seemed important to you, but you didn’t go ahead because you were gripped by the fear of failure?

If so, you are not alone. The fear of failure is a crippling force that affects almost every single human being.

Why?

In an article in Forbes, Vanessa Loder wrote “When we go outside of our comfort zone, we feel scared.”

She hit the nail on the head by using the word “scared”. That is the reason why the fear of failure grips so many of us when we wish to take giant leaps in our personal lives or professional lives.

Now, if you are expecting an article that will tell you to “Think positive” or “Believe that you can do anything you want”, then please be warned that this article won’t tell you to do that!

Instead, this article will give you one simple tip on how to overpower the fear of failure.

As simple as it sounds, the simple tip is this – tell yourself profusely that failure (in most cases) is better than inaction!

That’s it. There you have it.

Let me tell you a true story.

Three years ago, my best friend from high school and I started an anti-bulllying charity called Beat Bullying With Confidence Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/BeatBullyingWithConfidence and www.beatbullyingwithconfidence.com)

Initially, we were very concerned about how it will work out and if we will be able to make an impact on people who are being victimised through bullying (especially kids at schools).

We thought about it hard, we made a plan with projections, and we both put thousands of dollars from our pockets into the charity.

Fast forward three years, and is our anti-bullying campaign the mega success that we would’ve liked it to be? No!

There are other anti-bullying charities that have more reach than us, more funding than us, and more media coverage than us.

Did we work hard in the last three years? You bet we did!

To date, we have not received any government or corporate funding, we have not had any major media coverage, and we surely haven’t gone national or international.

There were times when we thought about throwing the towel and walking away. We didn’t.

The point that I am driving home is this – even though we haven’t become hugely popular and haven’t been on national/international speaking tours, our work is making an impact.

When we get emails from parents, saying “We love your anti-bullying app that our daughter downloaded. The exercises in the app are helping her re-gain her self respect”, we know that we did the right thing by starting this charity and releasing an anti-bullying app (which you can download for free by going to your app store or play store. Do a search for Beat Bullying With Confidence).

If you are to overpower the fear of failure, please remind yourself that failure (in most cases) is far better than inaction.

When I was a Life Coach, one of the biggest challenges that my clients (be it corporate executives or university students) faced was procrastination.

Inaction, in my opinion compliments the fear of failure. If you are gripped by the fear of failure, inaction will be like a very good friend to you.

The simplest way to kill inaction and conquer the fear of failure is to do something!

Once again, remind yourself that you are better off by giving it a go, than by being gripped by the fear of failure, and embracing inaction in the process.

Make a list of why you should give it a go. Your list could look like this:

  • What will I learn through this experience if I decided to go ahead and take action?
  • What will I learn about myself?
  • How will I develop and grow?
  • How can I get others to support me in this?
  • What is the opportunity cost?

Just by reminding yourself that failure (in most cases) is far better than inaction, you will be more empowered, encouraged, and excited to take action.

Think about this for a moment – if people didn’t overpower the fear of failure, what would life be like for you and me right now? How many inventions would have never taken place?
Mediocrity would’ve had a higher presence in society today.

Quote: “Failure is another stepping stone to greatness”. Oprah Winfrey

Please think of the fear of failure as a boom gate on your road to achievement. Just because the boom gate is down, it doesn’t mean that you will be stuck in that spot for ever. Once the boom gate goes up, you have full liberty to move right ahead.

Acknowledge the fear of failure, and then overpower it by reminding yourself that failure (in most cases) if far better than inaction. Then, inaction will be replaced by positive action.

I hope I have given you a simple insight into how you can overpower the fear of failure, and become proactive in achieving what you were put on earth to do!

A Logical Perspective on God

People have many different perspectives on who or what God is. For some, God has a specific form, for some God has many forms, and for some God is formless. Some believe in multiple Gods and some in One. Some believe their notion of God alone to be correct and all else to be wrong, while some believe their notion of God to be inclusive of all other beliefs. And then there are some who think there is no such entity as God.

Among all these perspectives, the term “God” refers to a Higher Power or a Higher Reality than the world we live in. Some pray to the Higher Power in the hope of making things better for themselves in this world and/or beyond. Some have true unconditional love and devotion towards the Higher Reality as they believe its lot more pure and unchanging compared to anything else in this world and hence much more worthy of love. Some think this world is the only reality and don’t believe in any other Higher Reality.

People who fall in the last category are usually being rational/logical/intellectual about what they believe to be real. They only go by what science has to say about reality, and since science hasn’t proven the existence of a Higher Reality, they don’t believe in it. Before you congratulate yourself for being in this category, let me mention that those who have true unconditional love and devotion for God are much more peaceful and happy in life than those who don’t. I can vouch for this as I have personally experienced all these categories myself up-close. So the intellect could actually be blocking you from experiencing something really wonderful. As Mark Twain said: “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that it just ain’t so.”

Instead of letting the intellect be a blocker, it can be used as a tool to explore if the existence of a Higher Reality atleast makes logical sense. Lets see how it actually does:

Say you are taking a walk downtown amidst many shops, malls, etc. and the place is bustling with people, some of them with pets, and there is probably also a small park on the side. You marvel at the tremendous variety of apparel, art pieces, gadgets, devices, etc. on display, admire the architecture of the buildings, and maybe also notice the different types of vehicles moving about. You think to yourself how advanced human intelligence is to have created all these sophisticated things. And then you look at the different humans, animals, trees, plants, etc. that are way more sophisticated than the most advanced machinery ever created by human intelligence. Would you think that all of them were just created by chance without requiring any intelligent cause?

We take for granted a human-like intelligence to be the cause of even a simple piece of pottery, what to say of the magnificent array of galaxies, stars, planets, moons and other celestial objects spread across the entire universe. One may believe that all of these came into existence after a big explosion (as a popular science theory tells us), but it doesn’t take too deep a thinking to wonder if it really appeared just by chance out of nothingness. And even if it somehow did, how come all the “stuff” coming out of this explosion arranged itself so elegantly? One may argue that those are just the different fields, forces and other laws of nature in action. But why do these laws even exist in the first place? By chance? And then how come dead non-living matter suddenly became alive and started sustaining itself and producing more of its kind? Again by chance? And those single living cells just started evolving into complex organisms by chance too? And eventually, just by chance, we have human beings who are capable of looking back at the universe and ponder upon its and their own existence!?

If left to chance, each of the above events would have an extremely low probability of happening, and a long series of them occurring one after the other would be surely considered impossible. In fact, if such events can happen by chance, pretty much anything can happen, e.g. all the water on the planet might dry up instantly or a new moon might appear in the sky suddenly or you might start growing another head this moment or pretty much any such random thing that seems to be impossible. But such things don’t happen and the universe appears to work in a very systematic and lawful manner. All of these indicate the presence of an intelligent cause, making it a way more logical and sensible option than the absence of it. Having an intelligent cause in-turn points to the existence of a Higher Reality that we seem to be unable to perceive, understand or even imagine.

This would all be just plain theory if there weren’t countless people through the ages across different parts of the world who have actually experienced a Higher Reality. These people are not bluffing. A bluff would not last more than a few years or a few decades at max, but we still see majority of the world trusting various scriptures written many thousands of years ago. This is only because the Truths revealed in these scriptures have been repeatedly validated and re-validated over the centuries and millenniums through real experiences of innumerable people. Moreover, the teachings in these scriptures cannot have any underlying selfish motive as they do not benefit anyone else except the student.

Its true that the experiences people have had are very diverse, as is clear from the variety of descriptions of the Higher Reality across different religions and sects. The reason for this diversity is that the Higher Reality is vast (has to be if its the intelligent cause behind this entire universe and more) and the human mind is tiny. So, in most cases, the mind is only able to experience the Reality partially. Hence, people’s accounts of it vary depending on which aspect of Reality they personally experienced. Moreover, different minds have different temperaments and have an inclination towards a certain aspect of Reality, which also results in them having different experiences. Even if there are differences in people’s experiences, they are all inherently consistent. Upanishads, the ancient scriptures of India, are the most comprehensive account of the Higher Reality as they are based on the experiences of hundreds of realized sages and saints as compared to just one (which is the case in most other scriptures of the world). Here is an immaculate talk on the nature of the Higher Reality as per the Upanishads: Defining God

One of the reasons why intellectually-oriented people are put-off by the notion of a Higher Reality is because it usually gets portrayed as God(s) in superhuman-like forms located somewhere within or beyond the universe. Its important to note that these forms are much more effective than something formless in terms of vividly expressing the pure and perfect qualities pertaining to the Higher Reality. They help stimulate tremendous love and devotion within an individual, which is a proven path (called Bhakti Yoga) to directly experience the Higher Reality. But one doesn’t have to blindly believe in these forms as there is another path to directly know the Higher Reality completely based on intellect and knowledge (called Jnana Yoga). The talk I linked above is especially beneficial for this path.

You might be wondering what difference does the knowledge of a Higher Reality make in your life. Apart from the fact that your whole life and everything around you derives from that Higher Reality, here’s the ultimate bombshell answer straight from the Upanishads: That Thou Art (Tat Tvam Asi) – the Supreme Highest Reality is what you really are! You think you are a body-mind-intellect complex but you are gravely mistaken about your own reality. The search for the Higher Reality – which is both transcendent and immanent – is not about explaining the creation or working of the universe, neither is it about experiencing something externally, its about knowing who you truly are. You will eventually discover on this magnificent journey that you are not a living being trying to have a spiritual experience, but that you are an eternal spiritual “being” that seems to be undergoing a life experience. And its high time for you to realize your own true nature which is no less than Infinite Existence, Consciousness, Bliss. That alone can help you overcome the miseries and sufferings of life and bring unlimited peace and joy. It is the highest and the only real purpose of life – nothing else matters!

Embracing Opportunities vs Being Overcautious

Many years ago, I read a quote by the legendary Jim Rohn who said “If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.”

That is so pertinent to almost anyone alive today.

What is a risk anyway? It is the exposure to the unknown. It is being vulnerable to loss. It is a gamble.

What is the opposite of risk? The opposite of taking a risk is called certainty.

Please think about the following questions for a moment:

  • Are you mostly taking risks in life?
  • Are you mostly looking for certainty in life?
  • Are you balancing the two out generally in life?

In my first book, I wrote about this in detail. When I worked as a financial adviser, I used to do an investment risk profile of my clients before investing their money.

I wish that people did a risk profile for their lives and then asked themselves:

  • Am I taking too many risks in life?
  • Am I playing it too safe in life and looking for certainty?

Followed by:

  • Are my results in life what I really want?
  • Are my results in life due to me taking too many risks?
  • Are my results in life due to me playing it too safe?

What responses did you get?

Do you feel like making changes in your thought patterns after responding to the questions above?

In a recent article of his, Tony Robbins stated “We’re not wired for happiness; we are wired for anxiety. We are wired for what’s wrong. We are wired for survival, which means our brain is constantly looking for anything that could hurt us.”

Yes, you can safely say that human beings have “playing it safe” hard wired in them.
The one thing that I learnt in my financial planning career was this – generally speaking, higher risks meant higher rewards.

Once again, I said “generally speaking” ie. not always.

You have to use your own discretion and take into account how you can take calculated risks.

In an article in Forbes, Margie Warrell stated “Fear regret more than failure – history has shown that we fail far more from timidity than we do from over daring.”

Neither Tony, nor Margie, nor Ron is suggesting that you should risk it all and take a gamble at every turn in life.

What this article is striving to achieve is to get you out of your comfort zone and to embrace opportunities.

Here are five steps that you can take in order to overcome playing it safe most of the time:

  1. Ask yourself “What’s the absolute worst thing that could happen?” – This question will bring to the forefront of your mind the worst case scenario. Nothing could be worse than that! If the worst case scenario doesn’t scare you to death, then you should be encouraged to take action and have faith in things turning out in your favour. Why? Because nothing worse could happen.
  2. Ask yourself “What will I still gain or learn in the worst case scenario?” – The response to this question will make you focus on the positives if you found yourself in the worst case scenario. For example, you could’ve gained an invaluable experience or a lifelong lesson. Always look for something that will support you in being productive in the future.
  3. Do the best you can with the best you have – If you left no stone unturned and did everything in your power to ensure a favourable outcome, then you should hold your head high at the end. Despite the outcome (favourable or unfavourable), you can tap yourself on the shoulder for doing what you did. The world is full of people who do not execute. You have put yourself in an elite league by taking action. Find pride and solace in that.
  4. Look at the opportunity cost – What will happen if you didn’t take action? Sure, you could still be in your comfort zone and be playing it safe. As Jim Rohn put it “You will settle for the ordinary”. Make a list of all possible opportunity cost scenarios. I read a few months ago that Mark Zuckerberg invited five of his fellow university students to explore a business opportunity. Only two of them came to the meeting. Guess what? They both are billionaires now! Can you imagine the opportunity cost for the other three university students who decided not to attend the meeting?
  5. Review the regular risks you take subconsciously – I clearly remember this – When I was a kid, my dad and one of his closest friends were talking about taking risks in their career. My dad’s friend (who was more like an uncle to me) said to my dad “Every day we take risks. We leave home in the morning, and there is a risk of being bitten by a dog, of being involved in a car crash, or of being struck by lightning”. The point of illustrating that was to show that we do take risks daily without realising. When you review these risks, you might become less risk averse when it comes to embracing opportunities that life presents to you.

The point of this article is not to get you to blindly take risks and be exposed to higher losses or danger.

All I am saying is that you should explore embracing opportunities by using the above mentioned five steps, and then decide on a course of action. Life rewards those who take action!

Quote: “The walls we build around us to keep sadness out also keeps out the joy”. Jim Rohn

I hope I have given you a simple insight into embracing opportunities instead of being overcautious.

De-Stress Yourself by Walking Your Own Path

By Doron Libshtein

As founder of the Mentors Channel, I have had the privilege and joy of working very closely with some of the world’s greatest spiritual teachers and mentors like Deepak Chopra, Karen Berg, Byron Katie, Robin Sharma, Tim Kelley, Osho International and more.  As a result, I have worked hard to spread their inspiring words and messages across the world to millions of people.

Today, I would like to invite you into my world, and share with you one very important and profound insight about stress.  This insight is what I share with the many people who come to consult with me.  These people almost always complain about feeling chronic stress and lack of balance in their lives.  They are also frustrated because they cannot find the “de-stress” tools to cope.

I have recently received hundreds of questions through the Mentors Channel about how to achieve more balance and reduce stress.  It has become abundantly clear to me how important it is for me to share my profound insight on these matters that I have achieved as a result of my many years of experience with meditation and life coaching.

Here is what I have found:

When you were a very small child, most decisions were made for you. But then you grew up and started making your own choices – what to study, where to work, what friends to surround yourself with, who to marry, whether or not to have children and so on.  Sometimes you felt that you were making the choices freely, while other times you may have felt forced to choose a particular course.

Consequently, at some point in time, you discovered a very disturbing truth: You are no longer in charge. From the moment you wake up until the moment you go to bed, you are stressed about your life.  Whether these stressors come from your job, money issues, marriage or other aspects of your lifestyle, it may become apparent that a number of your past choices are the stress culprits.

Here are some examples of what people have been sharing with me over the years about stress:

  • Many know the power of meditation and the enormous positive effect of taking time for themselves. However, I often hear that they are too stressed to find the time to meditate, even for just a few minutes a day because of all their obligations. This just leads to more stress and frustration because they know what they need to do, but feel powerless.
  • On the other hand, I also encounter those who have a rich spiritual life, meditate, attend seminars and take time for self-reflection. Some of these people are even in the healing professions.  However, they oftentimes express feelings of discontent and angst because they have not made enough money, achieved a certain stature in their profession or achieved the lifestyle they envisioned for themselves.
  • And then I also hear from others, who share with me that they have everything – money, a good family, a good job, high stature within their community – and yet still feel stressed. They often express a feeling of being unfulfilled amounting to a growing frustration with their life.  Despite all their achievements, they are not happy, feeling like they are not being true to themselves.

Why has this happened?

The answer is not obvious. It is rooted in the choices you have made in the past and continue to make. The frustration, stress, lack of balance, lack of time – these are direct consequences of these choices.   You have tried your best to do what you think is right for you, but somewhere along the way you lost your sense of purpose.  That is because what you thought was your purposeful path might not have really been your own.

It is clear to me that you cannot be genuinely happy or fulfilled until you become fully committed to finding YOUR path of purpose and fulfillment in your life.  Walking your own path means being completely in control of the choices you make in your life that can lead to a genuine sense of purpose.  (Research has shown that people who express that they live a purposeful life live healthier, longer lives).

Here’s the good news:  Finding your path to fulfillment is available to all of us.   You just have to make the decision to find it and be willing to seek out the best resources and mentors to help you along the way.

Imagine waking up every morning knowing that you are no longer stressed.  Imagine spending your day exactly how you feel you are meant to.  Even when things do not work out as planned, you know you are on your purposeful path and are not worried that everything is not perfect.

Imagine knowing when to say yes and when to say no to what comes your way and feel great about it.

Imagine feeling fully aligned physically, mentally and spiritually.

Imagine going to sleep at night knowing that you walked your path of purpose that day and feel full of life’s energy, rather than drained or exhausted.

I know this is all possible because I have personally experienced it in my own life.  I have also seen it with the great mentors I have worked with along my path.  As a result, I founded the Mentors Channel six years ago and have dedicated myself to help others receive this great gift of walking their own paths.  For help in finding your own path, I implore you to speak with one of our many mentors who can help you discover insights about yourself that you may have trouble uncovering on your own.

Doron Libshtein is the mentor to the world’s top mentors.  Having been mentored throughout his own career, Libshtein has come full circle and is now regarded as a world-leading self-development mentor, having worked closely with the field’s top luminaries, including Deepak Chopra, Byron Katie, Robin Sharma, Tim Kelley, Marcia Weider and Karen Berg, founder of the Kabbalah Center.  He is also a prolific author and strategic entrepreneur, seeking to foster personal growth using the potential of the digital space.

Get Rid of Junk Emotions

By Shoba Sreenivasan, Ph.D. and Linda E. Weinberger, Ph.D.

We women know all about calories. Think of how you examine the packaging of a product for its nutritional content. How many calories? Is it high fat or low fat? Some products may look good, but it turns out they’re not good for you.

But what about your emotions? There are junk emotions, just like junk food. Junk emotions don’t bring out your best. What would happen if you started to consider your emotions from the perspective that they are ingredients that you feed yourself? In our book, Psychological Nutrition, we did just that.

We look at relationships as products. Some are nutritious, others are not. Just as with junk food, a diet of junk emotions (anger, resentment, worry) leads to psychological malnourishment.

Because we don’t look at our emotions in this way, we unthinkingly consume a diet so high in negative emotions (high fat), that there’s no room left for positive emotions (low fat). We see this in women who are juggling work and family. They are sandwiched between childcare, eldercare, and family and professional obligations; pretty soon they’re running on empty because they’re in psychological starvation.

Here are some key concepts:

HIGH-FAT EMOTIONS are negative and energy draining; they suck the fun and creativity out of your life and are bad for you.

  • High fat emotions create and maintain a cycle of pessimism and low-energy. They are fatiguing and close the door to creativity and joy.
  • They require no discipline; are knee-jerk emotional reactions; are a long-term habit.
  • Some examples: guilt, resentment, anger, envy, jealousy, pessimism, feeling less-than, fear, doubt and second guessing yourself, pessimism, frustration

LOW-FAT EMOTIONS are positive and increase your energy. Low-fat emotions should dominate your psychological intake.

  • Low fat (or positive) emotions energize you. They open up your world, both in terms of your inner self and the doors to opportunity.
  • However, they require practice and discipline.
  • You have to be mindful of the emotions you are consuming; you have to deliberately restrict your diet of high fat emotions.
  • Some examples: excitement, optimism, calmness, contentment, joy, focused attention, clear thinking, laser-like concentration.

So what do you do?

Just like food products have labels that describe their nutritional content, there should be “psychological nutritional labels” for reactions, relationships, and situations. In this way, you will know (or at least have a good idea) whether a situation has a “high fat” or “low fat” content before you enter it.

7-day Snapshot:

In order to be mindful of your high and low fat emotional intake, you will have to undertake an assessment process in the form of diary. Many of us hear the word “diary,” and we groan, “Oh my God, another obligation!” Let’s face it, we’re all busy. But, we’re also interested in becoming and staying healthy.

Psychological Nutrition simplifies this to a 7-Day Snapshot.

We test-drove it on ourselves just to make sure it really was doable. And it is.

  • The 7- Day Snapshot means taking one period of 7 days, and for each day recording your emotional reactions, the triggers, and the values (positive or negative). We tell you exactly how to do this.
  • This snapshot gives you a clear picture of your emotional nutritional content and whether you are psychologically nourished or malnourished.
  • That is, how many “high fat” or “low fat” emotions do you experience in a day?
  • The 7-day snapshot can also help you construct a psychological nutritional label. Are there people or situations that should have warning labels?

The Pay off:

Even though we are psychologists and intellectually appreciate the impact of negative emotions on our own psychological well-being, we were both astonished by our first 7-Day snapshot. It revealed that we would wake up tired, hurried, looking toward what was next on the agenda, and not really aware of what we were experiencing. We were living on a diet of high-fat emotions—mainly driven by the work ethic. So, our psychological nutrition was poor.

We are much more mindful now. We literally construct psychological nutritional labels, where some have clear warnings.

Tips:

If it is dangerous to your psychological health, don’t do it.

  • Even if it means someone won’t like you.
  • Even if it means that person has the label of “family member” and you feel obligated to do it.
  • Even if it means by saying “no” you will be perceived as not accommodating.

Time is a finite quantity and none of us know how much of it we have. Start each day in making life as fulfilled and joyful as it can be, and build on that.

Spirituality for Atheists

Lot of highly intelligent people in an intellectually-oriented field (like science, technology, engineering, etc.) tend to be atheists i.e. they don’t believe in the existence of God. This is primarily because their understanding of the term “God” is usually limited to some super-natural being(s) sitting in the heavens controlling the universe – as portrayed in many religions. Any person of reasonable intelligence might question the validity of such an entity without any proof, so their disbelief is quite understandable.

One huge mistake they commit though is to equate spirituality with religion. Spirituality is about discovering the absolute Truth or Reality that underlies everything and answering some of the most fundamental questions regarding life and existence, like who am I?, what is the purpose of life?, where did this whole universe come from?, how can I experience enduring and lasting happiness?, etc. Its very inquisitive and experiential in nature. Religion on the other hand is generally a belief system built upon spiritual truths and evolved in a way that makes it easier for the masses to practice. Spirituality serves as the foundation for many major religions in the world like Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Jainism, etc. It usually starts with someone – like the great ancient saints of India, Vyasa, Buddha, Jesus, Sankara, Mahavir, etc. – discovering and experiencing the Reality through meticulous spiritual practices. They then, out of their unconditional love and compassion, share how others may also discover the Reality for themselves and experience unlimited peace and bliss that gets rid of all miseries and sufferings in life forever. Large number of people tend to follow the philosophy and teachings of these enlightened beings closely for some time and lot of them are able to realize the Truth. But as time passes, with the original teacher long gone, it turns into a religion of blind faith completely hiding, and sometimes even forgetting, its underlying spiritual core. And, since many people don’t dive deep enough to learn the spiritual basis of religion, they take religion to be baseless and stop believing in it and leave spirituality also behind in the process. What a terrible loss!

Spirituality is the science and technology of our internal world, the world of our mind (our thoughts, feelings, experiences, memories, intelligence, ego, desires, aversions, tendencies, etc.). Even if you are an atheist, you are surely looking for one and only one thing in life – happiness. If you think about it, everything that you ever do is so that you can feel happy. And happiness exists in one and only one place – the mind. Just like we use mainstream science and technology to better understand and manage the external material world, we need to use spiritual science and technology to systematically understand and manage the internal world of our mind. Without that, its like groping in the dark searching for happiness in the external world and quite often getting hit in the head with various miseries and sufferings in the process. Its quite a pathetic state to be in.

Another common mistake is to equate mind and brain. Brain is a part of the physical body, an organ, that enables the mind to operate. But the mind is something subtle. We may cut open the head and monitor the brain as deeply as we like but we will not be able to tell a single thought, feeling, experience, memory, etc. of the person. We will only be able to correlate activities of the mind with activities in the brain. Hence the science of brain doesn’t serve as a science of mind. The latter needs a very subjective approach which is what spirituality provides.

One might raise a question as to why spirituality and not psychology? Various reasons. Psychology is primarily focused on curing mental illness (like depression, stress, emotional imbalance, etc.) and not on improving the well-being of a normal mind. A new branch of psychology called positive psychology has started exploring that front but its still in its infancy, whereas spirituality has been developed and practiced over thousands of years by innumerable people with incredible results. Moreover, psychology, like any other science, tries to understand the mind in an objective manner whereas there is a lot going on in the mind that is highly subjective in nature which cannot be objectified.

Although there are many spiritual philosophies and most of them can be quite effective, the best I have found is Advaita Vedanta. Its one of the most rational and comprehensive spiritual philosophies. Even some of the cutting-edge science like quantum mechanics, para-psychology, etc. is getting more and more aligned with what Vedanta has already been saying for thousands of years.

Here are few excellent videos that I highly recommend you watch to learn more about Vedanta and Spirituality in general. They shall be worth every minute of your time!

Please don’t let your intellect block you from diving into the wonderful world of spirituality. Instead, use the intellect as a tool to analyze and manage your mind through proven processes, and lead a much happier and fulfilling life. Innumerable highly intelligent people have been doing it successfully over thousands of years all over the world and so can you. I wish you all my best!

The Surprising Freedom that Productivity Brings

We all strive for more meaning in our lives, right? Being more productive may be the key to having more precious moments every day.

We want to do the best and be the best we can be, not only for ourselves but for our spouses, our children, and all the people in our lives. Being the best version of ourselves creates opportunities that change our lives for the better. Being productive doesn’t mean you are doing more or doing it faster, it means you are living intentionally, creating time for the things that bring you the most joy and satisfaction in your life.

When we solely focus on the urgent things in life, we miss out on the beautiful moments that we live for: the deep connections with friends, morning yoga, meditation and reflection, playing with our children and making real time with family. Experiencing these moments means we have to move beyond simply existing, to actually living. It means we must stop mindlessly chauffeuring our children around and managing the family to do list, to inhaling and exhaling the beauty that each day brings. We become more present when we put ourselves first, mind, body and spirit. No more promising yourself you will meditate when you have time for it and don’t feel rushed. Oh, the irony!

It is time for a change. If we want different results, we must be willing to do things differently.

Imagine feeling fully present in every moment. You’ve completed your to do list, you have a good handle of what is coming up in the next few days and your feel rejuvenated from your morning walk or work out. You are feeling good about life and about yourself and you are able to fully invest and be fully present in all areas of your life….it’s tough to even imagine that feeling isn’t it? The fact it, that sense of freedom is at the tip of our fingers, we just have to be willing to put in the work to get there. The longer we procrastinate and let things slip, the further behind we feel and the heavier the weight of each day feels. How we are supposed to be present in each day if we can barely get through breakfast without panicking about all the things we didn’t get done the day before and all the things we aren’t prepared for today?

Based on my experience coaching thousands of women around the world towards achieving their greatest potential, I find this one exercise to be one of the most effective tools out there to help you become more productive and ultimately more present in your daily life: The 30/30 Rule.

The 30/30 Rule is more than a rule or a task, but a way a life. The idea is to spend 30 undistracted, uninterrupted, completely intentional minutes every day on something that is 30 or more days away. By checking into your schedule 30 days out, you are not only seeing what is coming up but gathering perspective on your life by acknowledging what you have already said yes to. If it’s on your calendar, you’ve already said yes, meaning you care about it and have made it a priority. Definitely don’t let those things slip through the cracks by not being prepared for them.

By implementing these 30 minutes into your day, yes you will be losing 30 minutes but you will be gaining so much more. Not only will you feel more confident about your schedule, but you will be practicing accountability and becoming impeccable with your word each and every day. If you see your child has a party at school coming up and you have signed up to make the cakepops, use those 30 minutes to put a reminder in your phone to pick up the ingredients in a few days so you are prepared to make them when the time comes. Being prepared is everything and it sure beats running to the store 10 minutes before they close the night before!

Life is full of enough surprises! Don’t let things on your calendar surprise you. By staying on top of the things you have committed to, you are freeing yourself up to those beautiful moments that make life so enjoyable.

I encourage you to find a friend that will hold you accountable as you make the shift to implementing these 30 minutes into your day. Their encouragement and support will take you further than you think. We are so much better together than we are alone! Or maybe the 30 minutes a day seems doable, but you still don’t know how you can find time for your morning yoga. Ask a friend to be your accountability partner in this endeavor. Sharing your dreams and desires with others is a healthy habit to develop. By doing this, you are building your team. A team of people who love you, support you and will cheer for you, even on the rainy days.

Use those 30 minutes to create the life you dream about. Chase it and embrace it! Drop the excuses, stay ahead of your schedule, and live freely – breathing in every moment, enjoying every laugh and being fully present.

What Is Your IGS?

An Excerpt from Your Inner GPS by Zen Cryar DeBrücke

You were born with a factory-installed guidance system. It is like the GPS in a car. This system is called your Internal Guidance System, or IGS.

The guidance it gives you has many different purposes. The most important one is to get you from one end of your life to the other with as much joy, ease, and fulfillment as possible. Throughout the book, I will reveal other parts of its purpose in guiding you. For now it is important for you to recognize that it knows and deeply understands everything you desire to achieve, as well as countless things you have yet to even think of. It also knows specifically how you would most like for your desires to be achieved. Its purpose is to guide you to the specific way of going about your life that will make you, and everyone around you, the happiest.

The reason its guidance is unique and special is because it was designed just for you and your life purposes. What I have discovered is that we have not just one life purpose but several, if not hundreds of them: to be a good parent, to support particular people in our lives, to be a good child, to care for aging parents, to transform the world around us in either little or big ways. Your life purposes can range from something as simple as giving the perfect book to someone at just the right time, to transforming the industry you work in, to giving your child the start in life they need to accomplish their own life’s purposes.

There are also things in your life that are not yours to do, and your IGS will guide you away from them so you don’t waste your life force or use it unsuccessfully. As a group these purposes can feel overwhelming, but with your IGS it is not only possible but also easy and enjoyable to do it all.

This inner GPS contains your life’s specific road map, which shows on a soul level all the things you are here to participate in, experience, and achieve. Your GPS is with you every moment of every day, constantly there to support you — to give you guidance about what you are thinking and doing and how you are being. This can sound a bit scary or uncomfortable, until you realize that it has no judgment on any of these aspects. It does not think of you as good or bad. It relates to you as a soul that it is here to guide and protect. It knows who you really are deep down inside. It knows the “pre-you,” the one who preceded who you are now. One of its purposes is to help you uncover and remember who you really are — the “you” who existed before life took over and covered up your perfection and beauty. It has only unconditional love for you and the journey you are on.

Your IGS is very much like a wise best friend, a career counselor, a life coach, and a spiritual teacher all rolled into one. In fact, it is so amazing and interesting that I had to write an entire book to introduce you to it.

How Your IGS Works
Your IGS provides guidance by giving you sensations in your body. It resides in the area between your throat and solar plexus. The solar plexus is the triangular area between your lower ribs, above your stomach. The sensations that you feel in this area of your body are forms of guidance.

As you are thinking, your IGS is listening and sending a physical signal letting you know whether your thoughts are true, aligned with your purpose, and taking you toward health and happiness.

Your IGS creates what I like to call an urging feeling. It nudges you to move toward various activities in the world around you. It feels like a desire upwelling inside you. For an example, think of the last time you had an urge to call a friend or family member. When you followed that urge, did they respond with “I was just thinking of you!” or possibly “I really needed to talk to you. How did you know?” That urge was from your IGS.

Your IGS provides you with information that supports you as you: respond to your life as it develops instead of reacting to it according to false scenarios, old habits, or unconscious beliefs; and learn to focus on your desires instead of fears.

By learning to follow your IGS, you will find that your life seems to work out, that it is somehow just right in the way it unfolds, and that you become a magnet for what many consider small and large miracles.

How To Adjust Your Focus.

Regardless of how good or how tough things get in life, the one thing that is always in your control is your focus.

Where your focus goes is entirely up to you.

In a previous edition of Ideal Insights, I spoke about “Adjusting your focus” when it comes to going through a negative experience in life.

In this edition, let’s discuss how to adjust your focus when it comes to what you wish to achieve in your life.

Where your focus goes will be critical in whether you make it or whether you break it.

There are two types of people in the world:

  1. Those who focus on the outcome.
  2. Those who focus on the process.

Let me tell you a story, which I told to a group of Year 9 students when I delivered a presentation (on Life Skills and Bullying) at their school last week.

When I was at high school, I used to be a track athlete.

Our sports teacher would take us (athletes) to the football oval at the school for training, twice a week from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

If you have ever lived in a colder part of the world, you will realise that during winter, it gets pretty cold at around 4:00 pm.

Melbourne (Australia) is known for its cold wintry winds.

Do you have any idea how many times, I stood in the middle of that football oval (with the cold wind blowing in my face), asking myself one question – “Why am I doing this?”

I would think about my friends and what they would be doing at the time – sitting next to a heater, sipping on hot chocolate, and watching Skippy The Bush Kangaroo.

I absolutely hated training, and thought about quitting many, many times. On training days, my mood would change and I would start to feel down as soon as lunch time came. I knew that I was only hours away from training in the cold conditions.

You see, my focus was on the process, not on the outcome.

My focus changed when I started winning (trophies, medals, and certificates).

Then, my focus turned towards the outcome, and turned away from the process.

After winning at athletics events, I would come back to school with a trophy in my hand, and my friends would marvel at the trophy. I would then think about how I would rather be training in the cold than be sitting next to a heater and watching TV at home.

Once I started winning, my focus became fixed on the outcome. I realised that in order to get to the outcome, I needed to go through the process.

During my speech at the school, I described how I was feeling during training (cold, moody, and unhappy), while standing on the right of the stage.

When I described how I was feeling after winning (ecstatic, joyful, and proud) I moved to the left of the stage.

I stood there and said “When you focus on this (pointing to the left of the stage), that (pointing to the right of the stage), will not matter much.

Please take an inventory of where your focus is in life at the moment.

Which type of person are you most of the time:

  1. The one who focuses on the outcome?
  2. The one who focuses on the process?

If you focus on the process, you may get side tracked and dis-encouraged.

Please don’t get me wrong here. I am not insinuating that you should totally ignore the process. You have to go through the process and you have to validate your feelings.

The point is this – don’t let your attention get fixed on the process.

Let’s just say that you are on a mission to get in better shape. You may need to lose weight or put on weight.

The process might include eating accordingly, exercising accordingly, and being disciplined with other choices in life.

If you think about the exercise regime that you must stick to, you may feel like quitting.

What you can do is create acceptance about the fact that you must stick to the exercise regime, in order to get the body you want.

When you are exercising, and things get hard, focus on the outcome. Picture yourself in the body you want. That should be motivating enough.

As you evaluate your progress, realise that you are one step closer to the outcome, and that the exercise regime (the process) is one of the main reasons for that progress.

Yes, I realise that this is easier said than done. Believe me, I am a fitness fanatic and I still dread training when my friend (a former professional boxer) calls me to join him for a boxfit  session.

The main point that I emphasise in this article is this – you have the liberty to control your focus instead of letting your focus control your mentality, your emotions, and your actions.

Quote: “Focus goes where energy flows”. Tony Robbins

I hope I have given you a simple insight into adjusting your focus in order to be more productive in life.

Inspiring you towards your excellence,

Ron

How Do You Play the Prosperity Game?

Have you ever played the Prosperity Game?   I play it periodically when I am feeling out of sorts financially or feeling the urge to grow.  And this morning I was inspired to look at it from a new direction.

Basically, the game is played by picking an amount of virtual money to spend each day.  You can spend it on yourself, on your business or anything else you choose.  I started with a penny which was challenging because very little costs a penny these days.

Once you pick a starting amount, it doubles every day – and you have to spend all the money each day.  What I quickly found the first time I played is that the virtual amount you can spend on “things” you need and want personally is quickly satisfied.

So perhaps you create a business and grow it with the virtual resources you have at your fingertips.  At another point, you may find that you want to contribute to the well-being of others.   Once you have received everything you desire, where can you spend it?  More businesses, more contributing and you may find you experience joy in helping others.

This morning, the question I am pondering is:  How much do you have to have before you are comfortable giving to others?

The question emerges from a T. Harv Eker class I listened to yesterday.  He was addressing the internal conflict many of us feel between making lots of money and our concept of being spiritual.  We want to pursue our dreams, serve the world, and make a difference, yet we cannot justify charging for our services.  If you cannot charge, you cannot afford to continue the work.  If you cannot continue the work, then your dreams flounder, you do not serve the world or make a difference.  And, in fact, if your thoughts about money are seriously negative, you become part of the problem.  “You become a taker rather than a giver.”

If you knew that you receive money (income) in direct proportion to the value or service you give others, but felt that you could not continue to provide that service if you did not have the financial wherewithal to do so, what would happen?  What would you do?  Eker suggests that you get comfortable with charging for your services and satisfy your spiritual side by contributing to others in some way.  Find a way to balance your income.  He tells a wonderful story of someone who charged for services 4 days per week, and donated those same services 2 days per week to those who could not afford to pay for what they desperately needed.

And so the question:  At what point are you comfortable giving to others?  Or vice versa, at what point are you uncomfortable giving to others?

Would you be willing to play a version of the prosperity game designed to expand your comfort zone when considering when you can give?  This time we will start with a penny, a real penny.  I’d like you to donate a penny to someone or something today.  Toss a penny into the tip cup on someone’s counter.  Feel okay?  If not, do it again tomorrow.  Is it harming you in any way?  Get comfortable with giving a penny.

As soon as you are comfortable, double it.  Put in 2 pennies and keep doubling the amount you give as long as you feel comfortable spending real money in this way.  You can change the beneficiary at any time you wish.  And when the amount starts to have a real impact on your finances, you can switch to donating time, services or stuff.  And when even that amount no longer feels possible, organize a way to raise the next level of resources for someone, perhaps a crowdfunder platform. As soon as you reach it, double the giving goal once again.   Keep donating to the causes that call to you, the ones that give you joy in the giving and the ones that make you feel the way you want to feel when you have enough to pursue your dreams and live the lifestyle you desire.

It is said that when you appreciate your life now, more of what you appreciate comes to you.  Your dreams take off.  Your goal to be of service and make a real difference in the world can be fulfilled.   May your giving be your way of showing appreciation for all that blesses you and may even more blessings follow.  Try it and let me know what you experience.

To a more abundant life,

Susan
