What country is that?

It’s always entertaining living with teenagers. Annika, Greg’s 14 year old from Australia, stayed with us for 3 weeks over the holidays. One day Brian, my 15 year old, says to me: “Mom, they’re having that KROQ around the world concert again! I want to go! Green Day is playing in Bulimia!” Annika starts laughing hysterically. I do a double-take. Bulimia? “It’s Bolivia!” Annika shouts across the room. Okay – later in the day we’re actually listening to the radio station, and KROQ is playing in Scotland. These are the kinds of things you have to write down to remember so you can all laugh about it again when they’re older. Share/Bookmark]]>

How is Murder Entertainment?

I am beyond upset right now.  I am appalled, sickened, and totally thrown by what I just witnessed on television.  If I had seen this sooner, I would have written sooner.  I had E! Entertainment on in the background while I was busy working on my newsletters.  The show “Kourney and Kim Take Miami” was on – I was hardly paying attention, until I saw Scott Disick, Kourtney’s baby daddy, shoot and kill an alligator.

Yes, he did.  We saw the shot.  We saw the blood.  We saw the lifeless body.  It was horrible.  It was REAL.  This is not fiction, this is not a scripted drama – this happened ON CAMERA.  And then, to make matters worse, Disick and his group of hunter pals guffaw as they take the dead animal to the skinner, and he proceeds to cut off its leg.  The whole time the group is making jokes, and Disick arrogantly is caught up in how great his alligator shoes are going to be.

This network is called E for “Entertainment” – how is this entertainment?  I understand that there are people who don’t get it, who take life for sport, who think hunting is a game.  But I certainly don’t need to see this on television.  Have we gotten so de-sensitized to killing that this can happen on a cable television show and no one blinks?

Thankfully, PETA noticed, and responded.  But that’s not enough.  Any one who values life, who values the tradition of television needs to respond, and loudly!  There is no excuse for this.  I know that the Kardashians are known to trash talk – they are bleeped out all the time – even their subtitles are bleeped out.  And yet, to kill an animal is ok?  No – it’s not.  If this were a dog instead of an alligator would people be more upset?  A life is a life – whether it is a pet, a wild animal, or a human.

E! needs to have some respect – for its viewers, and for the value of a life.

Eat, Pray, Blog: Getting There without Going Anywhere

Eat, Pray, Love has spiritual seekers everywhere following in Elizabeth Gilberts footsteps, literally, traveling to Italy, India, and Bali on an adventure of a lifetime. And now that Julia Roberts has followed suit on the big screen, it is likely that many more will make the sojourn to these exotic locations in pursuit of something to marvel at.There is much to marvel at anytime you travel.Everything is new, and different. It opens your eyes, engages the senses. Travel is an amazing opportunity to learn and grow through new experiences.

And yet, as Confucius stated so plainly: No matter where you go, there you are. The spiritual journey is a journey within. We dont need to climb a mountain in Tibet to achieve the kind of inner peace we so desperately crave. We dont need to go anywhere, we dont even need to do anything, to find ourselves in a place of balance and bliss.

So, given that we can’t all jet off to foreign countries on a whim, let’s go on our own spiritual quest, right where we are, starting with eat.

Tantra teaches us that we experience the world through our five senses.Taste is definitely one of those senses where we can experience much pleasure  and given the cuisine, one might even say nirvana. When eating, the sense of smell also comes into play; the aroma heightens the anticipation, and enhances the flavors.Sight is involved with food. We’ve learned from the many Food Network shows how important presentation is in a meal. When food looks good, we’re more likely to perceive it as tasting good.Touch is in the texture of the food. How does it feel in your mouth? And even sound is in food from the sizzle on the grill to the crunch of that perfect bite, to the oohs and aahs that emerge from satisfied diners.

Great pasta dinners aren’t only in Italy. We can cook, and have fun in our very own kitchen creating and experimenting with sauces and seasonings. Or we can find a lovely little neighborhood restaurant, and allow ourselves to be served with careful attention. Eating gives us a chance to indulge all of our five senses, to be present in the moment, to savor the experience and to be aware of the feelings that it evokes from deep within. When we are in present moment awareness there is no regret, fear, or guilt. There is only gratitude. And that is a beautiful place to be.

Pray takes us into silence, into the stillness where all the wisdom of the universe can be found. Our busy world is filled with commotion. We are inundated with errands and e-mails and obligations. Our lives are slaves to the clock and the calendar, scheduled out farther that we even care to plan. But when we meditate, there is no time and space. The world seems to stop; our mind begins to quiet. Gone are the commercials and the traffic and the to-do lists. Suddenly we become aware of our breath, which brings us back to ourselves. We listen, and answers come, truth reveals itself, calmness settles in.

We could be in a temple, some historically preserved monument. Or we could be right where we are, perhaps smack dab in the middle of the couch. It doesn’t matter, because it’s all the same, it’s all connected. When we get together and meditate in groups, the experience is amplified. Energy rises, and circulates, and infuses each participant. Take that time away from the busy-ness, shut off the phone, unplug from technology  get back to nature, get back to yourself and you’ll remember who you are.

Love is all about relationships. And life is all about love.Who we love, and what we love. When we are doing what we love and also helping people, then we have found our dharma or purpose in life. There is nothing more fulfilling. If there is anything this world needs more of, it is love. We can never get too much of it! Extend yourself beyond your comfort zone, beyond the parameters that have been self-imposed, and reach out to someone with love. It’s easy to love a baby, or a kitten. So innocent and sweet, so receptive and accepting. The challenge is for us to love something or someone that might appear to us to be unlovable. The rejected, the downtrodden, the messy, the annoying. Yet when we do open our hearts, and we allow that love to pour forth, we feel an influx of love coming right back to us. Love the moment, every moment. Love where you are, wherever that is. Marvel at your surroundings, the miracles that extend in and around the immediate environment. Everything that is here is here for you. The ground yearns for your footsteps. You love, and you are loved completely.

When you implement these simple techniques, what starts as a holiday becomes a habit. That habit then becomes a lifestyle. It’s a matter of mindfulness. We have the opportunity to practice every day, every moment, anywhere we are.

My new e-course with Daily Om is 9 Weeks to Joyful Living. Do the exercises and you’ll find you are living a life filled with elegance, joy, and simplicity. Once you do that, you can’t go back.

Spring Has Sprung!

Ah, Spring has Sprung!  It’s a time of change, renewal, and allergies!  Something is in the air that has me sniffling like crazy.  Spring is Kapha season, so I’m doing some dosha balancing rituals to help keep my Kapha from getting out of control.  Just something more for the “to do” list these days.  I have to keep our squirrel feeder filled to the brim with peanuts because one of our little squirrel friends is preggers.  She’s so sweet, and we want to keep her well fed and happy.  The birds are nesting under the eaves right outside out kitchen window.  Flowers are blooming, and there is a new energy in the air to go with the sunshine.  Gotta love it!

Things are so busy around here that I can afford to be a little more particular than usual about what auditions I choose to go on.  My agent called last week with a commercial for me.  He starts by giving me all the details, time, place, and so forth.  And then he says: “You are reading for the role of bungee jumper.”  Very calmly he says this!  I’m like – what?!  Say that again?  Does that mean I have to bungee jump?  “Yes,” he replies.  Uh no, I insist.  Not doing that one!  Sure, I’d love a national television spot – but there are just some things I won’t do, even (or especially) for the camera: strip, eat meat, and leap head first into oblivion with a stretchy cord tied to my ankles.  Safety first, you know what I mean?  I’d like to think that I am just as adventurous as I ever was, I’m just not as crazy!  Still susceptible to hay fever, but I’m a little more immune to Spring Fever.

Creative and Crafty

My sister is planning her wedding, and of course, as matron of honor and the only lifestyle designer in the family, I’m into it big time!  I came across this site that blows me away.  There are some wonderfully creative and crafty women out there… maybe with a little too much time on their hands?  The site sponsored a toilet paper wedding gown contest – and you wouldn’t believe the winners – they’re all worthy of being in the pages of a magazine!  Check it out… and remember, they’re all made out of TOILET PAPER!!!

Magic at the Castle!

Last weekend Greg and I had the pleasure of visiting the Magic Castle in Hollywood once again!  Our dear friend Michael Vincent, magician extraordinaire from London, was in town to do his show and he invited us.  We were amazed, astrounded, and entertained!  And we laughed like crazy!  It is a wonderful  place, old time Hollywood where you have to dress up, coat and tie for the men.  Since this is October there were Halloween decorations everywhere, setting the tone for a festive and fun experience.  We brought my sister, Marci, and her boyfriend Steve, and they treated us to chocolate martinis after dinner – decadent!  Check out Michael’s website, he’s phenomenal!

Happy Halloween!

When my kids were little, Halloween was a huge deal around here. We planned costumes for months, and sometimes had different costumes for different events. Freddy would be Wolverine for the parade at school, and then a Ninja to go trick-or-treating and switch to a ghoul to go visit his grandmother. My boys have been Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles, dalmations, cowboys, and super heroes. Batman was always Brian’s favorite, I think he was Batman for 3 years in a row! This year I hear Power Rangers are back in vogue – a different version of Power Rangers, but they’re still recognizable to me. Brian, at age 16, has opted to skip the costume and just go to a party tonight as himself. But Freddy still has the spirit. I bought him a Jack Skellington costume (from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” because he’s a big Tim Burton fan) and he was so excited! I hope he sends me a picture from college. I can just imagine him trick-or-treating in the dorms. Meanwhile I’ll be at home answering the door – in my witch hat! 🙂

Brad and Jennifer – Splitsville

When I got the news this morning that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston had split up I felt sad. I don’t know these people, and yet I still feel badly for them. Is that crazy? I think a lot of us thought of this “golden couple” as a standard for American romance. It was the first marriage for each of them, and they certainly look beautiful together. But who is to know what goes on in any relationship besides the people actually in it? Sure, the tabloids can speculate, and fans can lap up the gossip – but happiness, and compatibility, is such a personal issue that only the people involved know the truth of the matter. I wish Brad and Jennifer all the best. Even under the best of circumstances, when a split is amicable, it is a change to adjust to, and it can be stressful. Many of us have experienced this and can relate. My advice would be to spend time with friends and loved ones, and to consider this a new beginning. Share/Bookmark]]>
